Capt. A. W. Wampler receives decoration
Word was received this week by Mrs. Wampler that her husband. Captain A. Willis Wampler. U. S. A., had received the Silver Star decoration for gallantry in action, somewhere in the North African Area. Captain Wampler, who is serving with the Armored Force has been overseas since January of this year. He landed at Casablanca, in North Africa. His citation reads in part, "when a column of tanks, proceeding forward over a road subjected to constant enemy shelling, was halted by a demolished bridge and was forced to cross a deep ravine, Captain Wampler dismounted his vehicle in the face of this heavy fire, supervised the hazardous crossing, reorganized the tanks, and remained in an exposed position until they had successfully accomplished their mission." Captain Wampler, who is owner of the A. W. Wampler and Son furniture store, is a graduate of Western Maryland College, class of 1935. He entered service June 1941, as a reserve officer and served with his units in the training areas at Forts Meade and Bragg before going overseas. Times 10/1/43
