Sergeant Thomas Tate was born in Pennsylvania on December 1, 1839. He enlisted at Westminster, joining Company F of the Seventh Maryland Volunteers as a Private on August 18, 1862 and was mustered in at Baltimore on the same date. Promoted to Corporal on August 25, 1862, he was promoted to Sergeant on May 22, 1863. Wounded at the Weldon Railroad at Petersburg on August 18, 1864, he was listed as sick at Whitehall Hospital in Pennsylvania from September 1864 until mustered out on May 31, 1865 at Arlington Heights, Virginia at war’s end. Following his military service, Sergeant Tate returned to Westminster and married Mary Jane Sauble Tate on December 18, 1866, and the couple had five children: Jacob, Ella Thomas, Eva, and Ada. Tate worked alternately as a carpenter and a farmer in Westminster and New Windsor before moving to Baltimore by 1900. He died on December 27, 1903.
