Captain Thomas Ocker was born May 16, 1837 and worked as a wheelwright until enlisting as a Corporal in Company A of the Sixth Maryland Infantry Regiment on August 18, 1862 at Westminster. Mustered in at Camp Hoffman in Baltimore on August 23, 1862, he was promoted to Sergeant the same day. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant of Company F on May 1, 1863. He was promoted to First Lieutenant of Company F on November 17, 1864, and then promoted to the rank of Captain on January 23, 1865. He suffered a severe leg wound on April 3, 1865, resulting in the amputation of the leg. Captain Ocker died at the Depot Field Hospital #6 at City Point, Virginia on May 4, 1865. He was posthumously promoted to brevet Major on August 22, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious service before Petersburg, Virginia." Ocker was one of three brothers from the Ocker family to die while serving in the Union Army during the Civil War.
