Private Robert F. Hunter was born in Carroll County on February 5, 1841. He married Elizabeth E. Davis Hunter on December 17, 1860 and worked as a laborer until entering the Union Army at the age of twenty-five. Hunter volunteered for service late in the war, on March 8, 1865 at Frederick, Maryland for a period of one year. He was assigned to Company C of the Third Maryland Infantry Regiment, Potomac Home Brigade, but due to the end of the war, Hunter’s military career was short-lived. He was mustered out of the army on May 29, 1865 at Baltimore. Following military service, Hunter returned to Westminster and resumed work as a laborer, eventually becoming a carpenter. He was the father of fourteen children and died at his Green Street home on October 28, 1907.
