    Private Jesse Asbury Smith was born in Baltimore County on February 4, 1846. He enlisted originally as a member of Company B, First Potomac Home Brigade Infantry and later re-enlisted on February 24, 1865 at Sandy Hook, Maryland as a veteran soldier and was paid a $100 bounty. Smith was mustered out of the army on April 8, 1865, near the end of the war. Smith married Margaret L. Swormstedt Koontz, a widow, on September 24, 1878, and the couple had one daughter, Lula. Smith lived in Westminster and worked as a machinist and a cigar packer and died on June 20, 1908.
