Born in Trikala, Greece, in the Thessaly region , his birth name was Dimitri A. Batayiannis. He first settled in Annapolis with his sister, Artimisia, and brother-in-law, Gregory Characklis. Together the two men opened a G & J Grill down the street from the state house. Jim lived above the restaurant. He moved to Westminster in the mid-1940s and partnered with his hometown friend, Steve Holevas in the Coney Island Lunch Room at 38 W. Main St. becoming sole owner when Steve left Westminster. Jim moved the Coney Island Lunch Room to 42 W. Main St. allowing for expansion of seating, a longer counter, and the grill in the front window. Specialities included chili hot dogs, burgers, fries and milkchakes. In the late 1950s it became the local hangout of the Baltimore Colts who trained at Westen MD College (now McDaniel College). Jim married Catherine Manolis in July 1929 and eventually the family lived at 172 E. Green St. in a house known as Linden Gables. The restaurant was sold in late 1961, following Jim's death in December 1960, to John & Popi Takas.
