Private Henry A. Raper was born on March, 11, 1841 in Pennsylvania. He joined Company I of the First Regiment Maryland Volunteer Infantry for duty and was mustered in at Relay House near Ellicott City, Maryland on May 27, 1861. He was shot through the chest, collapsing his left lung, and was captured at Fort Royal, Virginia on May 23, 1862. Re-captured by Union forces at Fort Royal on May 31, 1862, Private Raper was discharged from the army on July 17, 1862 due to wounds, with eligibility for a one-half disability pension. Following his wartime service, Raper returned to Westminster where he married Elizabeth Grass Raper on December 26, 1863, and the couple had five children: Anna, Mary, Mahala, Minnie, and Charles. He was mustered out of the army at Arlington, Virginia on July 2, 1865 at the conclusion of the war. Raper worked as a molder until his death in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 1, 1889.
