Captain George Washington Shriver was born on August 7, 1835 in Union Mills. He enlisted as a Sergeant in Company K, First Division of Columbia Volunteers, at Washington, D.C. on October 19, 1861. He was discharged on September 3, 1862 and enlisted as a Private in Co. K, Eighth Maryland Infantry Regiment, at Camp Bradford, on November 8 1863. He was relieved of duty and ordered to report to the Provost Marshal, of the Eighth Army Corps on February 12, 1864 for unknown reasons. Discharged at the end of his term of service on March 11, 1864, Shriver re-enlisted as a Private in Company E, 12th Maryland Infantry Regiment, at Baltimore on June 30, 1864. He was appointed to the rank of Captain on July 28, 1864 and was mustered out of the army on November 6. Following the war, Shriver returned to Westminster where he worked as a printer and passed away on February 5, 1870.
