Private George Washington Brown was born on November 30, 1828 in Baltimore. He enlisted in the Union Army for a three-year period and was mustered into Battery D, First Maryland Light Artillery on June 15, 1861. After serving his three-year enlistment, he was mustered out on June 15, 1864. Following his wartime service, Brown lived in Westminster and worked as a farm laborer. Married to Sarah Rebecca Frederick Brown, the couple had six children: George, Ulysses, William, Edward, Marian, and Ella. Brown received an invalid’s pension beginning February 25, 1880 and died on February 28, 1884. His wife received a widow’s pension after his death.
