Frederick Richter SeniorVeteran

Born in Germany on November 3, 1844, Private Frederick Richter immigrated to the United States in 1846 and became a naturalized citizen. He enlisted in Company C, Sixth Maryland Volunteer Infantry at Westminster on August 13, 1862. Like many men from Westminster, Richter mustered into the army at Camp Hoffman in Baltimore on August 23, 1862. As part of a rather uneventful military career, Richter was listed as being sick in the hospital in Alexandria, Virginia from January through August 1864. He returned to his regiment by September 1864 and was mustered out of the army at Washington, D.C. on June 20, 1865. Following military service, Richter returned to the Smallwood area near Westminster and worked as a farmer. He married Mary E. Stater Richter in 1896 and had three children: Charlotte, Anna, and John. Richter lived until the age of 83 and died at home in Smallwood on September 8, 1927. Private Richter is the only Civil War veteran buried in Historic Westminster Cemetery to have a grave marker that includes a full-size sculpture of a Union soldier.
