Private Ezra Shugh was born in Frederick County, Maryland on January 24, 1841. He enlisted late in the war in Company A , 103rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on March 14, 1865 and was mustered in on March 16 at Harrisburg, PA. He was mustered out three months later on June 25, 1865 at New Bern, N.C. due to the end of the war. After his wartime service, Shugh married Mary J. By 1880, they had re-settled in Woolery’s District of Carroll County, and Shugh worked as a huckster.
