Private Charles Merryman, a wheelwright, was born on January 30, 1834. He married his first wife, Irene Purkey Merryman on March 13, 1855. The couple had seven children: Vinton, Mary, John, Emma, Ida, Elenora, Minerva, and Emory. Merryman enlisted as a Private in the Union Army on March 22, 1864 at Hampstead, Maryland and was mustered into Company F of the First Maryland Cavalry Regiment on March 24 at Baltimore. Upon his enlistment, Merryman was paid an enlistment bounty of $100.00. By August 27, 1864, he was sick and in the hospital at Point of Rocks, Maryland. Rejoining his unit by January 1865, he was mustered out at Richmond, Virginia on August 8, 1865 at the end of the war. Following the war, Merryman worked as a farmer near Tannery. After the death of his wife, he married Rebecca A. Cullison Merryman on December 27, 1894. Rebecca died in 1911, and Charles lived until his death on September 1, 1922 at the age of eighty-eight.
