    Private Alfred T. Shreeve was born in Frederick County, Maryland on April 18, 1842. By 1860 he was working as a saddler. He enlisted in Company A of the Sixth Maryland Infantry Regiment on August 11, 1862 at Westminster and was mustered into service at Camp Hoffman in Baltimore on August 12. He received gunshot wounds to both thighs at the battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia resulting in the amputation of his lower left leg on June 1, 1864. Private Shreeve was listed as absent from duty and in General Hospital from June 1, 1864 until being discharged as medically unfit for duty on May 14, 1865. During a portion of that time he was hospitalized at Armory Square General Hospital in Washington, D.C. and on medical furlough in Westminster. Shreeve was mustered out of the army at war’s end on June 20, 1865 at Washington, D.C., and married Eliza Darby Shreeve on October 16, 1876. The couple had one daughter, Henrietta. Shreeve worked as a postal clerk at the Baltimore City Post Office and lived in Baltimore until his death on October 24, 1883.
