Winchester’s role in the
founding of Westminster is addressed in the history of the Union Meeting House and
cemetery covered in the first section of this book. The style of his grave, that of his
wife, and several other early settlers buried nearby is worth noting. Only a few of
these box-style tombs are found in Carroll’s cemeteries, but they were popular among
well-to-do individuals who could afford to erect them. Over the years, the Winchester
graves suffered greatly due to time and weather until restored on two different occasions, the most recent work being funded by the local William Winchester Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
