Memorial Page of Robert Clark
Private Robert Clark was born in Presque Isle, New Brunswick, Canada in 1839. He married Mary Ann Bell on March 21, 1859 before enlisting in the Seventh Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 25, 1862. He was slightly wounded in the leg at the Battle of Chancellorsville, making it difficult to march and to keep up with the pace of the Army of the Potomac on its way to Gettysburg. Clark fell ill on the march from Virginia to Westminster and was brought by ambulance to the McAllen Hotel (Main and Court Streets) on June 30, 1863, where he died of Typhoid Fever. With no local grave site, Private Clark reposes today in Mary Shellman's plot in the Historic Westminster Cemetery, far from his home in Maine.
