Memorial Page of Oliver Mathias

First Lieutenant Oliver H. P. Mathias was born on August 19, 1844. He enlisted in the Union army at Westminster on August 8, 1862 and was mustered into Company A, Sixth Maryland Infantry Regiment as a Third Sergeant at Camp Hoffman in Baltimore, Maryland. Sergeant Mathias was wounded on May 5, 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness. He was returned to duty and promoted to First Sergeant on July 20, 1864, and then to Orderly Sergeant on September 1. Honorably discharged on January 1, 1865 to accept a promotion, he was promoted to Second Lieutenant, Company A, Sixth Maryland Infantry on January 30, 1865 near Petersburg, Virginia. Again promoted for "gallant and meritorious services at the Battle of Sailor's Creek, Virginia," he was promoted to First Lieutenant of Company K, Sixth Maryland Infantry on June 3, 1865. At the end of the war, Mathias was discharged from the army and returned to Westminster where he married Lydia E. Wampler Mathias on March 16, 1867. They had one son, Irvin F. Mathias. Mathias lived and worked in Westminster as a store clerk before moving to Baltimore and working as a custom tailor. According to an article in the Democratic Advocate newspaper dated December 31, 1904, Mathias was granted a pension of $8.00 per month for his wartime service. Lieutenant Mathias died on August 14, 1917. His headstone lists him as “Captain” Oliver H.P. Mathias despite his discharge rank of First Lieutenant at the end of the war.
