Captain Lewis F. Byers, a blacksmith by trade, was born in Frederick County on November 13, 1837. By 1850 he was living in Baltimore where he enlisted in the Union Army for three years in 1862. Mustered in as a Private on August 11, 1862 at Camp Hoffman in Baltimore, he was promoted to Sergeant by January 1863. Promoted to Sergeant Major on September 20, 1864, Byers was wounded in action October 19, 1864 at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia. Promoted to First Lieutenant on December 1, 1864, he was assigned to Company K, Sixth Maryland Volunteer Infantry. On June 3, 1865, Byers was promoted to Captain of Company A of the Sixth Maryland. Byers was mustered out of the army near Washington, D.C. on June 20, 1865. Following the war, Byers settled in Westminster and became a member of the Door to Virtue Lodge of the Masonic Order and the Burns Post No. 13, the Grand Army of the Republic. Following his death in Westminster on February 9, 1883, he was buried in the Masonic Lot in Westminster Cemetery. A very unusual grave monument was erected for Captain Lewis Byers on August 27, 1888. The monument consists of an open book set upon a table. One side of the book is decorated with Masonic symbols and on the other a Grand Army of the Republic inscription.
