Memorial Page of Jesse Haines

Private Jesse L. Haines was born on July 9, 1840, and by 1860 he was working as a farmer. Enlisting on August 13, 1862 at Westminster, Maryland, he was mustered into the Union Army at Camp Hoffman, in Baltimore as a Private in Company C of the Sixth Maryland Infantry Regiment. Private Haines spent much of his time in the service in the hospital due to illness or battle wounds. Taken prisoner at the Battle of Winchester on June 15, 1862, he was paroled while in the hospital on June 13, 1863 in Berryville, Virginia. He was recorded as missing in action in September, 1863, following the Union retreat from the Battle of Chancellorsville. In spring 1864, he was on parole and later sick in the hospital in Annapolis. He was mustered out of the army while still listed as sick in the hospital on June 9, 1865. After returning to Westminster, he married Annie S. Haines on July 31, 1867. The marriage produced four children: Brook, Russell, Florence, and Chester. In 1870, Haines was working as a retail grocer but by 1880 had become a toll gate keeper on one of the several turnpikes going through Westminster. Private Haines died on December 29, 1890.
