Fred G. Holloway was the fourth president of Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College). Born March 28th, 1898, in Newark, New Jersey, Holloway attended Western Maryland College from 1914-1918. After receiving his AB in classics, he attended Westminster Theological Seminary for one year before transferring to Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, New Jersey. Holloway earned a bachelor degree of divinity from Drew in 1921 and later received a master of divinity from the school as well.
Holloway married Winifred Jackson in 1923 and together they had two sons, William J., and Fred G., Jr. As a Methodist minister, Holloway served in churches throughout Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia before returning to Westminster Theological Seminary in 1927 as a professor of biblical languages. Five years later, he was elected president of the Seminary and served in that post until 1935.
Following the sudden death of Dr. Albert N. Ward, Holloway was elected president of Western Maryland College. While president, Holloway oversaw the construction of Albert Norman Ward Hall and Gill Gymnasium (both still on campus). He also led the school through the turbulent years of World War II, supporting national defense initiatives and military training with the college’s resources.
In 1947, Holloway resigned as president of Western Maryland College to become the dean of Drew University’s theological school. One year later, he became the president of Drew University, a post he held until 1960. In 1960, Holloway was elected as a bishop in the Methodist Church and became the first bishop of the West Virginia Area. He retired as a bishop in 1968. Holloway died at the age of ninety in 1988 following an extended illness.
