Born in Gardiki, Greece at his parents' summer home but lived in Trikala on the Plains of Thessaly the rest of the year. Actual birthdate not known by his US Documents show August 15, the feast day of the Virgin Mary who is the atron saint of Gardiki so this may just be the date he chose upon arrival in America. "Arthur" left Greece after WWI with several suits lovingly made by his father who was a tailor. With $50 in his pocket, he sailed on the King Alexander docking at Ellis Island on January 25, 1921. The ship manifest listed his age as 27 but no one is certain if he was 27 or 24 years old. Arthur's name appears on the Wall of Honor on Ellis Island, NY. Arthur traveled to Dudblin, GA before settling permanently in Westminster in 1928. In the fall of 1935, Arthur became part owner in the American Restaurant buying out Tom Amprazis. Arthur became sole owner of the American when the other two owners sold out to him in 1936 and 1938. At that time, he borrowed against his life insurance policy and made extensive repairs and redecorated. In the fall of 1938 Lou Sharkey became his new partner. On a trip home to Greece, Arthur met and married Stamatia Tagaras in Trikala on November 23, 1947. After honeymooning in Athens they returned to Westminster, and the American Restauarant, in 1948. He sold his interest in the restaurant in 1959 to Peter Papandreu and opened a lunch place called Tina's Luncheonette which he owned until his retirement in 1968.
